Redox to distribute Specialty Herba Ingredients

Redox is proud to announce that it will soon be distributing a number of rice flour and rice starch products, from Herba Ingredients a leading European rice flour producer, which satisfy the highest of customer standards. The key to this range is the variety of specialty products including heat treated, low micro, low moisture, organic certified, rice flours with very low levels of heavy metals and contaminants, and two textured vegetable proteins free from soya and made from peas. This complements our existing range of native rice flour from Varavoot and is intended to extend our reach into the specialty market.

Rice flours and starches can be applied in various food applications including bakery, cereals, confectionery, coating and breading, dairy, meat, noodles, ready meals, soups and sauces, snacks, baby foods and more. They are also used in place of other cereal flours and starches, either as a partial or complete replacement, and can be used in personal care and pharmaceutical applications.

New to the Redox portfolio, rice starch is characterised by granules from 2 to 8 micron, much smaller than those of other cereals such as corn, wheat and potato. Its size is comparable to that of fat globules, offering a creamy texture that serves as a natural fat replacer. Gluten and allergen free, its neutral taste and white appearance make it an ideal ingredient for clean label coating and whitening in confectionery.  Due to its low protein (<1%) and fat (<0.1%) levels it will typically not alter the colour or taste of the product.  It also has very good thermal stability, used in UHT processes.

Herba ingredients, a part of the global rice and flour leader Ebro Foods, provides exceptional technical support and an opportunity to supply clean label solutions, where previously it has been limited to gums and modified starches. Also the rise of vegetarian and vegan meal choices enables this product to become a key ingredient in many new products.

A full range of samples will be available late March/Early April. For further information please contact one of our industry experts.

Product Focus - L-Cysteine by CJ CheilJedang

The demand for animal-friendly and free products is on the rise as people gain greater access to information regarding production processes and product ingredients. This generational change has led to innovations in manufacturing and the development of animal free products. Redox is a distributor of L-Cysteine (Cysteine), a synthetic amino acid manufactured by CJ CheilJedang (CJ) as part of their Aminature vegan range.

Cysteine is a semi-essential proteinogenic amino acid which has historically been obtained by hydrolysis of animal materials, such as poultry feathers or swine hair. CJ’s Cysteine, and its derivatives, however are produced through the use of an environmentally-friendly fermentation technology that uses glucose and raw sugar from natural corn. As one of the food and functional amino acids, Cysteine is used in:

  • food such as marinades and chicken flavoured seasoning
  • as an ingredient for a variety of human health products such as anti-oxidant supplements, joint and bone formulations, preparations for anti-inflammation and cognitive support
  • hair straightening, curl retention, anagen support formulations and skin care products
  • in pet food and to aid fur repair

Being a client of Redox means knowing what the next big thing is. Interview with a Graduate: Bachelor of Commerce

Redox has one of the largest intakes of science and business tertiary graduates in the industry, helping the new generation of professionals to employ their knowledge and develop their commercial nous. To assist candidates gain a greater understanding of Redox and our graduate positions we spoke to Daniel Rodriguez, a Senior Business Manager who started as a Graduate Sales Consultant, to tell us about his role and time at Redox.

What's your job about?

Redox is a global chemical and raw material distributor and it’s my responsibility to sell and source a range of those materials. I’ve been transferred to our Californian branch to increase our sales presence in the United States. My day to day involves finding new potential clients, looking at new avenues for potential business along with new products that can help increase sales. Also whilst continuing my product sourcing responsibilities.

What's your background?

I grew up in Macarthur NSW and studied a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Wollongong. Out of University I began a finance job and immediately didn’t like how anti-social the position was. My father is a firefighter who worked down the road from Redox head office. He saw that I wasn’t enjoying my job and suggested I put in my resume because in his words “He always saw people in suits walking out of that office”. I put in my resume and have now worked at Redox for about eight years. I moved to the United States in February 2016.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes. If you’re personable and have the drive to succeed you’re fit to be a salesperson at Redox. As a salesperson you need to be sociable and enjoy dealing with people. An element of competitiveness is also advantageous whilst also wanting to learn about industries you may not be aware actually exist.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The coolest thing about my job is that we have started from nothing in the United States, building off our own hard work. Nothing is gifted, as we are only relatively new, so every sale you make is on the back of your own work. Learning how industries operate in a different country is also a great experience, along with experiencing the differences with how business is conducted in general.

What are the limitations of your job?

You’re going to be rejected a lot more often then you’re going to be accepted. It just makes the positive phone calls and meetings all the more worthwhile because you then understand the work that went into getting those meetings and eventually those sales.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. Be open-minded. The career you think you want might not be what you actually enjoy.
  2. Understand you will make mistakes. No one is perfect on their first try. People are going to be more accepting of you if you’re willing to admit that you don’t know something.
  3. Be ambitious. Rarely is everything you want handed to you. Sometimes you can obtain what you want through avenues you didn’t think possible, but you will only know if you try.

11th February: International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Today is International Day of Women and Girls in Science! Implemented by UNESCO and UN-Women, the day is an opportunity to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls.

Science and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals. At present, less than 30 per cent of researchers worldwide are women. According to UNESCO data (2014 - 2016), only around 30 per cent of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education.

As one of the largest employers of chemistry roles in Australia, we understand the importance of equal employment opportunities and ensuring a diversified workforce. We aim to empower our staff both women and men, to employ their knowledge to better understand their clients and the challenges they face.
