Styrene Butadiene Rubber

About Styrene Butadiene Rubber

Styrene Butadiene Rubber, commonly abbreviated as SBR, is a synthetic rubber produced through the polymerisation of styrene and butadiene. While it does not have a single fixed chemical formula due to its copolymer structure, its composition typically ranges from 10 to 30 percent styrene with the remainder being butadiene. SBR is supplied in solid bale form or as latex, depending on its intended application. It is known for its excellent abrasion resistance, ageing stability, and cost-effectiveness, making it one of the most widely used synthetic rubbers globally.

SBR is produced by either emulsion polymerisation (E-SBR) or solution polymerisation (S-SBR), each offering distinct performance characteristics. Its versatility allows it to be used across a wide range of industries, including automotive, construction, footwear, adhesives, and industrial manufacturing. From tyres to conveyor belts, SBR provides a reliable balance of durability, flexibility and chemical resistance.

Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR) Uses

Tyres and Automotive Components

The largest application of SBR is in tyre manufacturing, where it is used to produce tread, sidewalls, and carcass components. Its abrasion resistance, grip characteristics, and durability make it essential for both passenger and commercial vehicle tyres. S-SBR grades are particularly valued in high-performance and eco-tyres for improved fuel efficiency and wet-weather traction.

Industrial Rubber Goods

SBR is widely used to manufacture industrial products such as conveyor belts, hoses, gaskets, seals, and rubber flooring. Its resistance to wear and mechanical stress makes it ideal for equipment that operates under continuous load or friction. It is also blended with natural rubber to enhance strength and processing performance in demanding industrial applications.

Construction and Building Materials

In the construction sector, SBR latex is used to modify cement and mortar, improving flexibility, adhesion, and water resistance. It enhances the performance of coatings, waterproofing membranes, bonding agents, and repair mortars, helping extend the life of structural materials. Its polymer-enhancing properties make it a key additive in modern construction chemistry.

Footwear and Consumer Goods

SBR is a common material in footwear soles, sporting goods, and general-purpose rubber items. Its cushioning, resilience, and durability provide comfort and longevity in everyday products. SBR blends are also used in toys, mats, and household rubber goods due to their affordability and consistent performance.

Adhesives and Sealants

SBR latex is used in pressure-sensitive adhesives, carpet backing, paper coatings, and sealant systems. It offers strong bonding strength, flexibility, and resistance to cracking, making it suitable for both industrial adhesives and consumer-grade formulations. Its balance of tack and cohesion is valuable in packaging, laminating, and construction adhesives.
