About Soybean Oil

Soybean oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the seeds of the soybean plant (Glycine max), made up largely of triglycerides of linoleic, oleic, palmitic and linolenic acids. It is supplied as a clear pale yellow liquid with a bland odour and taste. Production involves crushing and solvent extraction of the bean, followed by degumming, refining, bleaching and deodorising. Common grades include crude, degummed, refined bleached and deodorised (RBD), and epoxidised soybean oil, with the choice of grade set by the end application.

Soybean Oil Uses

Food Manufacturing

Soybean oil is one of the most widely used edible oils, applied as a frying and cooking oil and as the base for margarines, spreads and shortenings. It is also used in salad dressings, mayonnaise, sauces and bakery products, and is the source of soy lecithin.

Animal Feed

Feed manufacturers add soybean oil as a concentrated energy source in poultry, pig, dairy and aquaculture rations, and in pet food. It raises the energy density of the ration, supplies essential fatty acids, and controls dust and improves palatability in pelleted feed.

Personal Care and Oleochemicals

The oil serves as an emollient and carrier in creams, lotions, massage oils and soaps, where it spreads readily and conditions the skin. It is also a feedstock for oleochemical production, yielding fatty acids, glycerine, methyl esters and surfactant intermediates.

Industrial Applications

Soybean oil is a major biodiesel feedstock and a renewable base for lubricants and metalworking fluids. Epoxidised soybean oil is used as a plasticiser and heat stabiliser in PVC, while refined grades are used in printing inks, alkyd resins, coatings and adhesives.
