About Sodium Hypochlorite

Sodium Hypochlorite is an inorganic chemical compound with the formula NaOCl. It is typically found as a pale greenish-yellow liquid in aqueous solution and is known for its strong oxidising and disinfecting properties. Commercially available sodium hypochlorite solutions are usually supplied at concentrations ranging from 5% to 15% available chlorine. It is produced through the reaction of chlorine gas with a sodium hydroxide solution, forming a stable, highly alkaline liquid product under controlled conditions.

Due to its versatility and effectiveness as a biocide, bleaching agent, and oxidiser, sodium hypochlorite is widely used across multiple sectors. These include water treatment, sanitation and hygiene, food processing, agriculture, chemical manufacturing, and textiles. It plays a key role in disinfection and odour control and is also valued in industrial applications for its low cost and broad antimicrobial spectrum.

Sodium Hypochlorite Uses

Water Disinfection

One of the most common uses of sodium hypochlorite is in the disinfection of potable water and wastewater. It is used by municipal treatment plants and industrial facilities to kill bacteria, viruses, and algae. It is also used to disinfect swimming pools and cooling towers, where it helps maintain hygienic conditions and prevent biofouling.

Cleaning & Sanitation

Sodium hypochlorite is widely used as a surface disinfectant and cleaning agent in household, commercial, and industrial environments. It is an active ingredient in bleach products and is used to sanitise equipment, floors, and surfaces in healthcare, hospitality, and food processing industries. Its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity makes it effective against bacteria, mould, and fungi.

Textile & Pulp Processing

In the textile industry, sodium hypochlorite is used for bleaching cotton and other fibres to achieve a clean, white finish before dyeing. In the pulp and paper industry, it assists in the bleaching of wood pulp to produce white paper products. Its oxidising nature makes it suitable for removing colour and impurities from natural materials.

Odour Control & Waste Treatment

Sodium hypochlorite is used to neutralise unpleasant odours and treat industrial effluents. In wastewater applications, it helps break down organic compounds, reduce biological oxygen demand (BOD), and eliminate sulphide-based odours. It is also used in septic systems and grease traps as a deodorising agent.

Chemical Manufacturing

Sodium hypochlorite serves as a reactive intermediate in the production of various chemicals, including hydrazine, chlorinated derivatives, and other oxidised compounds. Its strong oxidising behaviour supports oxidation reactions in industrial and laboratory synthesis.
