About Di-Isononyl Phthalate

Di-Isononyl Phthalate, commonly abbreviated as DINP, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₂₆H₄₂O₄. It is a clear, oily liquid with a faint odour and is insoluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents. DINP is produced by esterifying phthalic anhydride with isononyl alcohol, typically derived from oxo-alcohol processes. It is a high-molecular-weight phthalate plasticiser known for its flexibility, durability, and stability, making it one of the most widely used plasticisers in the world.

DINP is primarily utilised in the manufacture of flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and other polymer systems, where it enhances softness, workability, and weather resistance. Due to its balance of performance and cost-effectiveness, it is used extensively in construction, automotive, electrical, and consumer goods industries. Its excellent ageing, low volatility, and resistance to extraction make it particularly suitable for long-life applications.

Di-Isononyl Phthalate Uses

Flexible PVC Manufacturing

The largest application of Di-Isononyl Phthalate is as a plasticiser in flexible PVC formulations. It imparts elasticity, durability, and resistance to cracking or brittleness in materials such as flooring, wall coverings, cables, hoses, and synthetic leather. DINP’s compatibility with PVC and excellent permanence ensure stable mechanical properties throughout the product’s service life.

Automotive Industry

DINP is widely used in the automotive sector for interior and exterior components including dashboards, door trims, underbody coatings, and sealants. It provides flexibility across a wide temperature range and maintains performance under UV exposure. Its resistance to heat and volatility contributes to the long-term stability of automotive materials, improving both safety and comfort.

Wire and Cable Insulation

In electrical applications, Di-Isononyl Phthalate is used as a plasticiser in PVC cable insulation and sheathing. It enhances flexibility, abrasion resistance, and dielectric strength, ensuring cables remain pliable and safe during extended service. DINP also resists migration and degradation under mechanical or thermal stress, which is critical for industrial and consumer electrical systems.

Building and Construction Materials

DINP is a key ingredient in sealants, roofing membranes, and coated fabrics used in construction. It improves weather resistance, UV stability, and adhesion properties in flexible building materials. Its excellent performance under heat and environmental exposure makes it suitable for both indoor and outdoor architectural applications.

Consumer and Industrial Products

Beyond construction and automotive uses, Di-Isononyl Phthalate is found in a range of consumer and industrial goods such as adhesives, rubber compounds, toys, and coated textiles. It provides a balance of softness and resilience while maintaining chemical and physical stability. DINP is often chosen as a reliable alternative to other phthalates in non-critical or general-purpose flexible PVC applications.
