About Aluminium Sulphate

Aluminium Sulphate, also known as alum or papermaker’s alum, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Al₂(SO₄)₃. It is available as a white crystalline solid or as aqueous solutions typically ranging from 8% to 17% concentration. Aluminium sulphate is produced by reacting aluminium hydroxide or bauxite with sulfuric acid. It readily dissolves in water, forming acidic solutions that hydrolyze to produce aluminum hydroxide, which is the basis for many of its applications.

The pulp and paper industry uses aluminium sulphate as a sizing agent in paper production, helping fibers bond together and improving paper’s resistance to water penetration. It assists in fixing rosin size to paper fibers, enhancing the paper’s ability to resist ink penetration and improving print quality. Aluminium sulphate also aids in retention of fillers and fines during the papermaking process, improving sheet formation and reducing material losses.

Industrial Applications

In the textile industry, aluminium sulphate serves as a mordant in dyeing processes, helping fix dyes to fabric fibers and improving color fastness. It is used in leather tanning to pickle hides and adjust pH during processing. Construction applications include use in waterproofing concrete and as an accelerator in concrete setting. Additional uses include soil pH adjustment in agriculture and horticulture, fire retardant formulations, and in the production of other aluminum compounds.
