Activated Carbon Powdered

About Activated Carbon Powdered

Activated Carbon Powdered, often abbreviated as PAC, is a finely ground form of activated carbon with a large internal surface area and high porosity. Though it does not have a simple molecular formula, its structure is predominantly amorphous carbon with extensive micro- and mesopores that allow for effective adsorption of a wide range of substances. PAC is typically produced by carbonising organic materials such as wood, coal, or coconut shells, followed by an activation process using steam or chemical agents to develop its porous structure. It is supplied in a dry, free-flowing powder form for ease of dosing and dispersion.

Powdered activated carbon is widely valued for its rapid adsorption rate due to its fine particle size, which offers a larger surface area in suspension. It is used across numerous sectors including municipal water treatment, food and beverage processing, pharmaceuticals, air purification, and chemical manufacturing. Its flexibility, fast action, and high adsorption capacity make it particularly suitable for batch processes and systems where filtration and separation are key requirements.

Activated Carbon Powdered Uses

Water & Wastewater Treatment

In both municipal and industrial applications, powdered activated carbon is used to remove taste, odour, chlorine, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and organic contaminants from water. It is often dosed directly into water or wastewater streams where it rapidly adsorbs impurities before being removed by sedimentation or filtration. Its effectiveness in treating seasonal taste and odour issues makes it a vital component of drinking water treatment plants.

Food & Beverage Processing

Activated carbon powdered is used for decolourisation, deodorisation, and purification of various liquids in food and beverage manufacturing. It is commonly applied in the production of sugar, edible oils, juices, and alcoholic beverages to remove colour bodies, unwanted odours, and chemical residues without altering the core characteristics of the product.

Pharmaceutical & Chemical Purification

In the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries, PAC is used to remove trace contaminants, unwanted by-products, and colour from active ingredients and intermediates. Its high purity and low ash content make it suitable for sensitive formulations where product consistency and quality are paramount.

Air & Gas Filtration

Though less common than granular forms in gas-phase applications, powdered activated carbon can be used in dust suppression systems, emission control, and emergency response scenarios to adsorb vapours and airborne pollutants. Its rapid dispersion and fast adsorption make it ideal for short-term or targeted treatments.

Environmental Remediation

PAC is used in soil and groundwater remediation projects to bind contaminants such as petroleum hydrocarbons, solvents, and pesticides. Its fine particle size allows it to be easily mixed into soils or injected into contaminated groundwater zones, where it adsorbs pollutants and helps reduce environmental risk.
