Birds cannot synthesize this essential pigmentation compound naturally and hence rely on feed for the same. Carotenoids also act as antioxidants for immunomodulation on the bird.
A bright yellow colour is traditionally considered a major criteria in the assessment of the quality of the egg yolk.
