About Caffeine

Caffeine (C₈H₁₀N₄O₂) is a naturally occurring methylxanthine alkaloid found in coffee beans, tea leaves, cocoa, guarana and kola nuts. It is supplied as a white, odourless crystalline powder or fine silky needles with a characteristic bitter taste, and is moderately soluble in water with solubility rising sharply at higher temperatures. Commercial caffeine is either recovered as a by-product of coffee and tea decaffeination or produced synthetically from urea based intermediates. The most common form is caffeine anhydrous, with caffeine citrate and granular or micronised grades available for specific processing needs.

Caffeine Uses

Beverages

Caffeine is added to energy drinks, cola style soft drinks, ready to drink coffee and iced tea, and functional waters. It contributes both the stimulant effect the category is built on and a bitter note that balances sweetness in the finished drink.

Sports Nutrition and Supplements

Formulators include caffeine in pre workout powders, energy gels, tablets, capsules and chews. It is one of the most studied performance ingredients, and anhydrous grades are preferred for their consistent assay and ease of blending into dry powder formats.

Pharmaceuticals

Caffeine is used as an adjuvant in analgesic products, where it improves the effect of actives such as paracetamol, aspirin and ibuprofen. It also appears in cold and flu preparations, alertness aids and specialist respiratory formulations.

Personal Care and Cosmetics

In cosmetics, caffeine is used in eye creams and serums to reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles, and in body products marketed for firming and skin smoothing. It is also formulated into shampoos, scalp tonics and haircare treatments.
