Paraffin Wax

Mengenai Paraffin Wax

Paraffin Wax is a white or colourless soft solid derived from petroleum. It is composed primarily of straight-chain saturated hydrocarbons, generally with the formula CnH2n+2, where ‘n’ typically ranges between 20 and 40. Paraffin wax is odourless, tasteless, and insoluble in water, and it melts at temperatures ranging from 46°C to 68°C, depending on its grade. It is supplied in solid slab, pellet, or granular form and may also be available in liquid form when heated. The wax is obtained as a by-product of crude oil refining during the de-waxing of light lubricating oil stocks.

Due to its consistent performance, stability, and versatility, paraffin wax is used in a wide variety of industries. It plays an important role in candle manufacturing, packaging, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, coatings, and food applications. Different grades of paraffin wax, including fully refined, semi-refined, and food-grade types, are used depending on the intended application and purity requirements.

Paraffin Wax Uses

Candle Manufacturing

Paraffin wax is a primary ingredient in candle production due to its clean-burning properties, ease of handling, and cost-effectiveness. It allows for excellent scent throw and colour blending and is widely used in pillar candles, container candles, and tealights across commercial and artisanal candle-making sectors.

Cosmetics & Personal Care

In cosmetics, paraffin wax is used as a moisturising agent and emollient in products such as lip balms, creams, and hand treatments. It forms a protective layer on the skin, helping to retain moisture. It is also used in spa and therapeutic treatments like paraffin dips for soothing dry or sore hands and feet.

Packaging & Coatings

Paraffin wax is applied as a moisture barrier in food packaging, especially for wrapping cheeses, fruits, and baked goods. It is also used to coat cardboard, paper cups, and containers to prevent moisture migration and improve surface strength. In industrial applications, it can be used as a lubricant or anti-corrosion coating.

Pharmaceutical & Food Additive

Food-grade paraffin wax is used as a coating or glazing agent for certain foods and pharmaceuticals. It is commonly found on confectionery, fruits, and in tablet coatings, where it enhances appearance, reduces moisture loss, and protects ingredients. It is inert, non-toxic, and compliant with food safety standards when appropriately refined.

Rubber & Industrial Applications

Paraffin wax is used in rubber processing to prevent ozone degradation and improve flexibility. It also serves as a binder, sealing agent, and processing aid in various industrial products, including matches, electrical insulators, polishes, and hot-melt adhesives.
