Monoethylene glycol (C₂H₆O₂), commonly shortened to MEG, is the simplest member of the glycol family, a diol with hydroxyl groups on adjacent carbon atoms. It is a clear, colourless, odourless liquid with a syrupy consistency and a sweet taste, and it is completely miscible with water. MEG is manufactured by the catalytic hydration of ethylene oxide. It is supplied as fibre grade (MEG-FG), which meets the tight purity specification required for polyester production, and as industrial grade for antifreeze, coolant and general chemical applications. It is also listed as ethylene glycol or 1,2-ethanediol.

Monoethylene Glycol Uses

Polyester and PET Manufacturing

The majority of global MEG production goes into polyester. Reacted with purified terephthalic acid, it forms PET resin for beverage bottles and food packaging, polyester staple and filament fibre for textiles, and film for packaging and industrial use.

Antifreeze and Coolants

MEG lowers the freezing point and raises the boiling point of water, making it the standard base for engine coolants and antifreeze in automotive, heavy vehicle and stationary engine applications. Inhibited formulations also protect the cooling circuit against corrosion.

Oil and Gas Processing

Gas producers inject MEG into subsea pipelines to prevent gas hydrates forming and blocking flow, then recover and regenerate it for reuse. It is also used as a dehydration medium to strip water from natural gas streams before transport.

Industrial Applications

MEG works as a solvent, humectant and chemical intermediate in resins, alkyds, adhesives, paints, printing inks and textile processing. It is also formulated into aircraft and runway de-icing fluids and into heat transfer fluids for chillers and process cooling.
