Sobre Sulphuric Acid

Sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄) is a strong mineral acid and one of the most widely produced industrial chemicals in the world. It is a dense, oily liquid, colourless when pure and ranging to brown in technical grades, and it is fully miscible with water with a strongly exothermic heat of dilution. Commercial production uses the contact process, in which sulphur is burned to sulphur dioxide, catalytically converted to sulphur trioxide, then absorbed to form the acid. It is supplied across a wide concentration range, from dilute solutions through battery grade to 98% concentrated acid.

Sulphuric Acid Uses

Fertiliser Production

The largest single use of sulphuric acid is fertiliser manufacture. It converts phosphate rock into phosphoric acid and single superphosphate, and reacts with ammonia to produce ammonium sulphate, supplying phosphorus, sulphur and nitrogen to broadacre and horticultural crops.

Mining and Metal Processing

Sulphuric acid is central to hydrometallurgy, leaching copper, nickel, cobalt, uranium and lithium from ores and concentrates. In steel and metal fabrication it is used for pickling and descaling, stripping oxide from surfaces ahead of galvanising, plating or rolling.

Industrial Chemical Manufacturing

The acid acts as a catalyst, dehydrating agent and reagent across chemical manufacturing. It appears in the production of detergents, dyes, pigments, explosives, synthetic resins and pharmaceutical intermediates, and in petroleum refining for alkylation and refining processes.

Water Treatment and Batteries

Water and wastewater operators use sulphuric acid for pH correction, alkalinity control and regeneration of ion exchange resins. Diluted to around 33%, it forms the electrolyte in lead acid batteries used in vehicles, standby power and industrial equipment.
