Sobre Sulphur
Sulphur is a non-metallic element that occurs naturally as bright yellow crystalline solids, most commonly in the cyclic S₈ form. It is odourless in its pure state, insoluble in water, and melts at around 115°C. Almost all commercial sulphur is recovered as a by-product of oil refining and natural gas processing, where hydrogen sulphide is converted to elemental sulphur through the Claus process. It is supplied in a range of physical forms including granular, prilled, pastilles, micronised powder, oil treated powder and molten sulphur, with the form selected to suit handling, blending and application method.
Sulphur Uses
Sulphuric Acid and Chemical Manufacturing
The single largest use of sulphur is as feedstock for sulphuric acid, which in turn underpins fertiliser, mining and chemical production worldwide. Sulphur is also the starting point for sulphites, sulphur dioxide, carbon disulphide and a wide range of sulphur based chemicals.
Agriculture
Elemental sulphur is applied as a fertiliser to correct sulphur deficiency in canola, cereals, legumes and pasture, and to lower pH in alkaline soils. Micronised and wettable grades are also used as contact fungicides and miticides in viticulture and horticulture.
Rubber and Polymers
Sulphur is the classic vulcanising agent, forming cross links between polymer chains to convert soft raw rubber into a strong, elastic and durable material. It is used across tyre manufacturing, industrial rubber goods, seals, hoses and footwear.
Mining and Industrial Processing
In mining, sulphur supports acid production for heap and pressure leaching of copper, nickel and other metals. Industrial applications include sulphur modified asphalt, sulphur concretes for corrosive environments, and use in pulp and paper processing.
