Propylene Glycol

Sobre Propylene Glycol

Propylene glycol, also known as propane-1,2-diol, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₃H₈O₂. It is a colourless, nearly odourless, and hygroscopic liquid that is miscible with water, acetone, and chloroform. Industrially, propylene glycol is produced by the hydration of propylene oxide, utilising either non-catalytic high-temperature processes or catalytic methods involving ion exchange resins or small amounts of acid or alkali. This versatile compound is utilised across various sectors, including food processing, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and industrial applications.

Propylene Glycol Uses

Food and Beverage Industry

In the food sector, propylene glycol functions as an additive (E-number E1520), serving roles such as an anticaking agent, emulsifier, flavouring agent, humectant, stabiliser, and thickener. Its hygroscopic nature helps maintain moisture in food products, enhancing texture and shelf life. It is commonly found in items like baked goods, frostings, dressings, food colourings, and flavourings.

Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products

Propylene glycol is widely used in pharmaceuticals as a solvent for oral, injectable, and topical formulations. Its ability to dissolve various substances makes it valuable in delivering active ingredients effectively. In personal care products, it acts as a humectant and emulsifier, maintaining moisture and improving texture in items such as creams, lotions, shampoos, and toothpaste.

Industrial Applications

In industrial settings, propylene glycol is utilised as a non-toxic antifreeze and coolant, particularly where accidental ingestion might occur, such as in food processing systems. It also serves as a solvent in formulations like paints, coatings, and inks, owing to its miscibility with water and organic solvents. Additionally, it is employed in the production of unsaturated polyester resins, which are used in manufacturing fibreglass-reinforced plastics.

Deicing and Antifreeze Solutions

Propylene glycol’s freezing point depression properties make it suitable for use in deicing solutions for aircraft and as an antifreeze in automotive applications. Its lower toxicity compared to ethylene glycol makes it a safer alternative in situations where human or environmental exposure is a concern.

Electronic Cigarettes

In the realm of electronic cigarettes, propylene glycol is a primary component of e-liquids. It acts as a carrier for nicotine and flavourings, producing the aerosol that users inhale. Its inclusion contributes to the throat hit sensation and flavour delivery in vaping products.
