Sodium Bentonite

关于 Sodium Bentonite

Sodium Bentonite is a naturally occurring clay primarily composed of montmorillonite, a smectite group mineral rich in sodium. It does not have a fixed chemical formula but is generally represented as Na₀.₃(Al,Mg)₂Si₄O₁₀(OH)₂·nH₂O. It appears as a grey to cream-coloured fine powder or granulated material and is well-known for its exceptional swelling capacity and high water absorption. Sodium bentonite is typically mined from volcanic ash deposits and processed through drying, milling, and sometimes activation to enhance its performance for specific industrial applications.

Due to its absorbent, sealing, and thickening properties, sodium bentonite is used across a wide range of industries. It is especially valued in civil engineering, environmental containment, drilling operations, agriculture, and animal nutrition. The product can be supplied in various grades tailored for applications such as liners, muds, sealants, and binding agents. Its natural origin and chemical stability make it suitable for both industrial and environmental uses.

Sodium Bentonite Uses

Drilling Fluids & Mud Additive

In oil, gas, and water well drilling, sodium bentonite is used to formulate drilling muds. It enhances viscosity, lubricates drill bits, stabilises boreholes, and helps transport drill cuttings to the surface. Its thixotropic nature makes it ideal for maintaining circulation and pressure control in both vertical and horizontal drilling operations.

Environmental Sealing & Geotechnical Barriers

Due to its swelling and impermeability when hydrated, sodium bentonite is used to line landfills, ponds, canals, and containment basins. It is also incorporated into geosynthetic clay liners and slurry walls for groundwater protection and contaminated site remediation. The material forms a low-permeability barrier that effectively blocks liquid migration.

Foundry & Metallurgical Applications

Sodium bentonite is used as a binding agent in green sand moulding for metal casting. It binds sand particles together to form strong, reusable moulds capable of withstanding high temperatures and maintaining dimensional stability during metal pouring. It also improves surface finish and reduces casting defects.

Agriculture & Animal Feed

In agriculture, sodium bentonite is applied as a soil conditioner to improve water retention and reduce nutrient leaching. It is also used in animal feed as a pellet binder and to aid in toxin adsorption within the digestive tract, promoting better animal health and feed efficiency.

Civil Construction & Waterproofing

Sodium bentonite is used in tunnelling, diaphragm walls, and other subterranean construction applications where groundwater sealing and soil stabilisation are critical. It can be injected or compacted into trenches to prevent seepage or erosion and is valued for its ease of application and long-term durability.
