Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is a strong oxidising agent and the simplest peroxide, made up of two hydrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms joined by an oxygen to oxygen bond. It is a clear, colourless liquid that is fully miscible with water and decomposes into water and oxygen, leaving no persistent residue. It is supplied as aqueous solutions, most commonly at 35%, 50% and 60% concentration, with stabilisers added to slow decomposition during storage. Technical, food and high purity grades are available, used across pulp and paper, textiles, mining, water treatment, chemical manufacturing and food processing.

Hydrogen Peroxide Uses

Pulp, Paper and Textile Bleaching

Hydrogen peroxide is a major bleaching agent for mechanical and chemical pulp, recycled fibre de-inking, and cotton and other natural fibres. It brightens material without the chlorinated by-products of chlorine based bleaches, and in textile mills it is used in the preparation stage to whiten fabric ahead of dyeing.

Water and Wastewater Treatment

Water and wastewater operators use hydrogen peroxide to oxidise hydrogen sulphide, control odour and corrosion in sewer networks, and break down organic contaminants. Combined with iron salts or UV light in advanced oxidation processes, it degrades compounds that resist conventional treatment, and it is also used to remove residual chlorine.

Mining and Metal Processing

In gold processing, hydrogen peroxide destroys cyanide in tailings and process water and can supply oxygen to improve leach performance. It is also used as an oxidant in uranium and base metal extraction, and in metal finishing for etching, pickling and cleaning copper and printed circuit boards.

Chemical Manufacturing

Hydrogen peroxide is a feedstock for peracetic acid, sodium percarbonate and organic peroxides, and is used in the hydrogen peroxide to propylene oxide (HPPO) process. Its clean oxidation chemistry suits epoxidation and other oxidation reactions in fine chemical and pharmaceutical intermediate production.

Food Processing and Packaging

Food grade hydrogen peroxide sterilises cartons, bottles and packaging material in aseptic filling lines before product is filled. It is also used to sanitise food contact equipment and surfaces, and in some regions as a processing aid in dairy, starch and seafood processing.
