Formic Acid

关于 Formic Acid

Formic acid, also known as methanoic acid,is the simplest carboxylic acid, and has the chemical formula HCOOH. It is an important intermediate in chemical synthesis and occurs naturally, most notably in some ants. Commonly used in the Oil & Gas Industry, the leather and textile processing industries and is also added to cleaning products and perfumes as well as an effective preservative and antibacterial agent that prevents reduction of nutritional value.

Formic acid is a highly versatile chemical used across a range of industries. Its acidity, reducing properties, and ability to participate in esterification make it valuable in leather processing, textile dyeing, agriculture, rubber manufacturing, and chemical synthesis. It is also gaining increased use in green energy sectors and as a preservative in animal feed due to its antibacterial and pH-lowering capabilities.

Formic Acid Uses

Leather & Textile Processing

Formic acid is widely used in leather tanning and finishing to aid in pH adjustment, deliming, and dye fixation. In the textile industry, it serves as a pH regulator and dyeing aid, helping improve the uptake and fastness of dyes on natural and synthetic fibres. Its ability to modify acidity without introducing chloride or sulphate residues makes it a preferred option in sensitive applications.

Agriculture & Animal Feed

In agriculture, formic acid is used as a silage preservative and antibacterial agent in animal feed. By lowering pH and inhibiting microbial growth, it helps extend the shelf life of stored feed and improve animal gut health. Its use in this context supports better feed conversion rates and reduces the need for antibiotic additives.

Rubber & Latex Coagulation

Formic acid is employed in the natural rubber industry to assist in the coagulation of latex. It replaces stronger acids like sulphuric acid due to its gentler reaction, which preserves the quality of the rubber and reduces damage to processing equipment. It is especially useful in field processing and small-scale rubber production.

Chemical Manufacturing

As a reducing agent and intermediate, formic acid plays a role in various chemical synthesis processes. It is used in the production of formate esters, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and plasticisers. Its relatively simple structure and reactivity make it suitable for hydrogen storage applications and other environmentally focused innovations.

Cleaning & Descaling

Thanks to its strong acidity and biodegradability, formic acid is used in industrial cleaning and descaling products, especially for removing limescale and rust. It provides effective metal surface treatment while being less corrosive than mineral acids, making it suitable for sensitive equipment in food processing and dairy industries.
