关于 Boric Acid

Boric acid (H₃BO₃) is a weak inorganic acid of boron, supplied as an odourless white crystalline powder or granular solid that dissolves readily in warm water. It is produced by reacting naturally occurring borate minerals such as colemanite, ulexite and borax with sulphuric acid, and is also recovered from boron rich brines. Boric acid is valued for its buffering capacity, its low volatility at high temperatures, and its ability to act as a source of boron in glass, agricultural and industrial systems. It is available in technical, granular and fine powder grades, with particle size selected to suit dissolution rate and handling requirements.

Boric Acid Uses

lass, Ceramics and Fibreglass

Boric acid is a primary boron source in glass manufacturing, where it lowers melting temperature, reduces viscosity and improves resistance to thermal shock. Borosilicate glass used in laboratory glassware, cookware and pharmaceutical packaging relies on boric acid for its low thermal expansion. In textile fibreglass and glass wool insulation, it assists fibre formation and improves tensile strength. Ceramic manufacturers use boric acid in glazes, frits and enamels to promote smooth, durable surfaces, reduce firing temperatures and improve the bond between glaze and body.

Agriculture

Boron is an essential micronutrient for cell wall development, flowering and seed set, and deficiency is common in sandy and heavily leached soils. Boric acid provides a soluble, readily available form of boron for foliar sprays, fertigation and liquid fertiliser blends. It is applied to boron responsive crops including canola, cotton, sunflowers, brassicas, legumes, grapes and tree fruit. Because the margin between deficiency and toxicity is narrow, application rates are set from soil and tissue testing, and the high solubility of boric acid allows accurate dosing.

Timber Treatment and Flame Retardants

Boric acid is used in timber preservation to protect against fungal decay, borers and termites, often in combination with borax as a disodium octaborate formulation. It penetrates timber effectively and remains stable through the service life of treated product. In flame retardant applications, boric acid promotes char formation and releases water on heating, slowing combustion and reducing smoke. It is applied in cellulose insulation, treated timber, textiles and cotton batting.

Metal Treatment and Industrial Chemicals

Boric acid serves as a flux in brazing, soldering and welding, dissolving surface oxides so that metals bond cleanly. It is included in electroplating baths, particularly nickel plating, where it buffers pH and improves deposit quality and appearance. Metalworking fluids use boric acid as a corrosion inhibitor and pH stabiliser. It is also a feedstock for other boron compounds, a component of nuclear reactor coolant chemistry, and a buffer in a range of industrial and laboratory solutions.
