Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC)

Sobre Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC)

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, commonly abbreviated as HPMC, is a non-ionic, water-soluble cellulose ether derived from natural cellulose through a series of chemical modifications. It does not have a fixed chemical formula due to its polymeric nature, but its structure is based on cellulose with hydroxypropyl and methoxyl groups replacing some of the hydroxyl groups. HPMC is typically supplied as a white to off-white, odourless powder or granules. It dissolves in cold water to form a clear, viscous solution and is widely valued for its thickening, film-forming, emulsifying, and stabilising properties.

HPMC is produced through a multi-step etherification process using alkali-treated cellulose reacted with methyl chloride and propylene oxide. The degree of substitution and molecular weight can be adjusted to create various grades tailored to different applications. Owing to its versatile functionality and non-toxic nature, HPMC is used extensively in the construction, pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic, and industrial sectors.

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) Uses

Construction Additive

HPMC is widely used in construction materials such as tile adhesives, cement renders, self-levelling compounds, and gypsum-based plasters. It improves water retention, workability, and open time, enhancing application performance and surface finish. It also prevents segregation and cracking during the curing phase of construction mixes.

Pharmaceutical Applications

In the pharmaceutical industry, HPMC serves as a binder, film-former, and controlled-release agent in tablet formulations. It is used to produce vegetarian capsule shells as a substitute for gelatin and is commonly employed in ophthalmic solutions due to its lubricating and stabilising properties.

Food Industry

Food-grade HPMC is used as a thickener, stabiliser, and emulsifier in various food products, including sauces, dairy alternatives, baked goods, and coatings. It helps improve texture, maintain moisture, and stabilise emulsions without altering flavour or appearance. It is also suitable for use in gluten-free and vegan formulations.

Cosmetics & Personal Care

In cosmetics, HPMC is used to adjust viscosity and improve the consistency of creams, lotions, shampoos, and gels. Its film-forming and moisture-retention capabilities make it a popular ingredient in skin and hair care products, providing a smooth, non-greasy feel.

Industrial & Specialty Applications

HPMC is used in coatings, detergents, ceramics, and latex paints as a stabiliser, film-former, or thickener. It enhances surface adhesion, suspension stability, and solution rheology, making it valuable across a variety of chemical formulations and industrial processes.
